The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is considering making it harder for the pharmaceutical industry to obtain generic medicines.
The move comes as a result of concerns that generic drugs are not being produced as quickly as they are, leading to shortages.
Pharmaceutical companies have long lobbied for an end to the patent-protected monopoly of the US pharmaceutical industry.
This would force the US Government to negotiate with the industry to produce generic medicines at competitive prices.
As a result, generic drugs would cost the American consumer less than the original drug, which in turn would reduce prescription drug costs.
In the US, generic drug sales have declined by more than a third over the past year, according to the PharmacoEconomics Institute.
“The drug manufacturers and the pharmaceutical companies are making a lot of money from the patents,” said David Mankiw, professor of economics at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
“[But] if we don’t have a price on this, there’s a real risk that prices are going to go up.”
The US government has been reluctant to negotiate directly with drug makers in order to prevent shortages.
The White House has also suggested that generic manufacturers be allowed to manufacture cheaper drugs at lower prices, but that has been opposed by some Republicans.
Despite the concerns, generic manufacturers argue that their product is better than the competition.
They also argue that the patent protection has cost them millions of dollars in lost sales and increased their costs of developing new drugs.
However, the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) has pushed back on the argument that the drug industry’s monopoly has cost the US consumer too much.
Ruth Kaplan, president and CEO of PhRMA, said the industry was not seeking to prevent the US government from negotiating with generic drugmakers.
Instead, she said, generic makers were “trying to make it cheaper to manufacture drugs”.
Kaplan added that the industry would not be happy if generic drug prices did not go up, saying that the cost of a generic drug was “just a very small percentage of what it would cost to manufacture a branded drug”.
What are the main reasons why generic drugs may not be available as quickly?
Pharmacists are concerned about the high costs of generic drugs, as the drugs are often designed for patients who are not eligible for traditional generic medicines or those who do not have access to specialist pharmacies.
Patients can be reluctant to use generic drugs because they have had to pay out-of-pocket costs for the drugs, said Dr David Ziran, a clinical pharmacist in Seattle, Washington.
What can you do to help?
People who are struggling with chronic pain or need to reduce their dosage can access prescription drugs from their doctor’s office or pharmacy.
Many doctors also prescribe generic medicines for conditions that can’t be prescribed by a specialist, such as arthritis and other conditions with a high risk of complications, such in chronic pain.
Other people with a lower risk of developing a serious illness such as asthma or a high blood pressure can also access generic drugs through their doctor, as they can often be prescribed a generic version of a prescription medicine, said Kaplan.
But generic drugs can also be prescribed for a number of other conditions, such the flu, hepatitis C, HIV, or diabetes.
Is there a safe and effective way to treat pain?
There is no evidence that the generic drug market is a viable option for treating pain, according in the US Drug and Chemical Review.
There are concerns that drug makers will make the drug unaffordable, or that they will introduce cheaper versions of their drug.
Even if generic drugs were to be widely available, people would have to pay more for their medications, which could lead to a rise in drug prices, said Professor Stephen Rabinowitz, a professor of health policy at Harvard University.
It would be better to treat chronic pain through alternative therapies, such through acupuncture or yoga.
If you are experiencing chronic pain and want to try one of these alternative therapies and you are not happy with the results, you can try a generic medicine.
How can I avoid the prescription drug problem?
As well as getting the prescription medicines you need for the condition you have, you should also take other steps to manage your drug use.
For example, it is important to make a regular check of your prescription drugs as a precautionary measure to make sure they are not causing any harm to your health.
